Capelin are members of the Osmeridae family of smelts. They are slender translucent olive colored, small-scaled fish that grow to a maximum length of 25 cm (10 in). In Asia, females capelin only is consumed and it is considered a delicacy. The roe content of the fish is important to determine the quality. Capelin roe and is considered as a high value product. Male capelin is more consumed in Russia and Eastern Europe countries.
