It is found in sub & tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean from Japan south to Australia and NZ, in Eastern Pacific (Hawaii and Socorro Island) & Mexico, also in the Indo-West Pacific: the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Gulf of Aden, and also in North West Africa, in surface waters down to 200 m. In Japanese, it is known as Saba
